ID Card Printing Technology
1. Direct–To–Card ID Card Printers
  1. Use a process called dye sublimation
    1. Uses a dye-based ribbon that includes 3 color panels: Yellow (Y), Magenta (M), and Cyan (C). The print head heats each color panel of the ribbon.
    2. The dye turns into vapor and diffuses onto the surface of the card to create vivid colors.
  2. Direct-to-card ID card printers can produce up to 16.7 million colors with 300 dpi resolution.
2. Retransfer ID Card Printers
  1. Uses a process called reverse transfer printing process.
    1. Images are printed onto a clear film called retransfer film.
    2. The film is fused onto the surface of the card
    3. The design is fixed and ready to be used.
  2. Allows you to print over the edge of your cards
  3. They can print on cards with uneven surfaces such as proximity cards, smart cards, or prepunched cards.
